People's Horse SUMMIT II (For Members)

Join us and your fellow members for the second annual People's Horse Summit, an immersive weekend in the bluegrass full of behind-the-scenes events and experiences at Taylor Made Farm, featuring our very own foal.

The People’s Horse Summit is our annual gathering of club members. Last fall, over a hundred of us descended on central Kentucky for an incredible, jam-packed weekend in Lexington, complete with behind-the-scenes access at Taylor Made Farm, immersive and educational demonstrations with horse experts, and plenty of barbecue, bluegrass music and Bourbon.

This year, we’ll have two special guests: California Chrome, our sire and the original People’s Champion, along with our baby foal, The People’s Horse.

Summit Briefing

The People’s Horse Summit is our annual gathering of club members. Last fall, over a hundred of us descended on central Kentucky for an incredible, jam-packed weekend in Lexington, complete with behind-the-scenes access at Taylor Made Farm, immersive and educational demonstrations with horse experts, and plenty of barbecue, bluegrass music and Bourbon.

Itinerary

We have a packed weekend, and here's the line-up.

Hotel Registration.

Friday Night, June 8th, 2018, 5:30 to 6:15pm.

We’ll kick off the weekend with a registration of members at the lobby of the Embassy Suites, where you’ll receive member badges and welcome bags. (OPTIONAL: For members who are able to arrive Thursday night or Friday morning, we'll be taking a group over to Churchill Downs for a day at the races. First post is 12:45 and we'll look to head over in the morning.)

Welcome Drinks & Reception

Friday Night, June 8th, 2018, 6:30 Pm.

We’ll board the People’s Horse Express bus and head downtown for our traditional welcome reception at McCarthy’s, an old school horse bar that’s a a favorite among jockeys, trainers and veterans in the equine world. The first drink is on us, and after a toast to kick off the weekend, southern favorites will be passed and served. (For those who can’t make early registration, you can simply meet us at McCarthy’s.)

Bus Back to Hotel, 9:30 pm.

After snacks and drinks, we’ll board the bus and head back to the hotel in anticipation for a major day at Taylor Made Farm and the first meeting with our foal.

____

Hotel Breakfast

Saturday, June 9th; 9:30 to 10:30 am.

We’ll gather for a complimentary breakfast in the hotel lobby (and test the Embassy’s make-your-own omelette station) then board the busses for a mid-morning arrival at Taylor Made Farm.

Taylor Made Farm, Arrival.

The trip from the Embassy to Taylor Made is a brief twenty minutes or so, and through the bucolic bluegrass of central Kentucky. We’ll meet in the breeding barn, where all the magic happens, for some coffee and introductory remarks by Duncan Taylor, president of Taylor Made, along with a special guest. Want to take a guess who?

Group Picture

Before we break into groups, we’ll pose for our annual group picture, a People’s Horse members tradition, then head off to meet the members of our new family.

Meet The Family

We are growing. Along with our first family — California Chrome, our stallion, Colerful Bride, our mare, and The People’s Horse, our foal — we’ll also check in on Sea Mona, runner up in our mare contest, and Sixtyfivenorth, who have both delivered foals and are on the farm. We’ll have a professional photographer on hand to snap pics of members with Chrome, Colerful, and our baby foal.

Picnic & Horse Demonstration

After saying goodbyes to our baby, we’ll venture deeper into Taylor Made Farm for a picnic-style lunch. Here, in parts of the farm few visitors get to see, we’ll be treated to a demonstration by Arianna Sikarius, an expert on horses and horse behavior. If you’ve ever wondered how horses think and act, or want to understand their unique personalities, Sikarius will show you in real time.

Belmont Stakes Party & BBQ at Daddy Joe’s

After the horse demonstration, those wishing to stay on for our farm day will head over to Daddy Joe’s, the restaurant and bar at Taylor Made, to watch the races and make bets among each other. We’ll have our house band outside on the lawn, strumming bluegrass, and set up for a late afternoon Bourbon tasting and barbecue with smoked brisket, pulled pork, Mac and cheese and other Southern favorites like Derby Pie as the races go on. (Why bother going to New York?!)

Bus Back to Hotel

After the band has played the last song, we’ll board the Express back to the hotel to collapse after a long day. For those heading downtown for a few drinks or late dinner, good luck! We’ll see ya at the hotel in the morning.

Sunday

Hotel Brunch & Volunteer Team Break Out

10:00 am

We’ll gather in the hotel lobby for a leisurely breakfast and review any questions or thoughts members might have. For those who have signed up as volunteers (you know who you are!) we’ll break out into teams to review the year ahead and plans for our Fall Summit in early October. By then, our foal will have grown considerably, along with our project.

Field Trip / Old Friends

12:00pm—

After breakfast, we’ll board the bus again and head to Old Friends, the equine retirement farm and our project partner. Here, you’ll be able to visit with some of the great horses and get a peak at where The People’s Horse is likely to retire after any racing or breeding career. It’s an hour trip up to Old Friends in Georgetown, and an hour back, so for members flying out of town on Sunday plan accordingly. For members wanting to stay in town, another group will head downtown on a walking tour of Lexington, ending up at the West Sixth Brewery (beers and snacks on us.)

A few notes:

Overall attitude. The People’s Horse is a club that is open, friendly, casual and easy. You won’t need any dinner jackets or shined shoes for this experience, and are welcome to come and go as you please. Want to spend alone time with family and break away? Go for it.

Travel. We have arranged for bus service and transportation the entire weekend and a cost that is factored into the Summit experience. If you wish to use a car service like Uber or Lyft or taxi for activities outside the itinerary, we support you, but the club cannot cover those costs.

QuestionsDon’t hesitate to ask. Just send us a note at members [at] peopleshorse.com and we’ll get back to you. See you at the Summit!

Lodging

We have secured a block of discounted rooms for members at the Embassy Suites at Lexington Green in Lexington, Kentucky, and we’ll be providing transportation to and from the hotel during the weekend. You can find everything you need to book your rooms on this booking page here. These rooms will be available until May 16th and we highly recommend that if you are considering joining us for this year’s Summit you book ahead. *Also note: hotel rooms are not included in our Summit package price.*

Guest Policy

We encourage members to bring friends, spouses, their kids and anyone else you'd like to have with you. For this year's Summit, we have developed a special guest package, which includes all activities, experiences and a complimentary annual membership.
