WHAT IS THE PEOPLE’S HORSE?
The People’s Horse is an immersive racing club that offers voting rights, in-depth reports, and members-only experiences around the breeding and training of our own racehorse.
WHAT’S CALIFORNIA CHROME’S ROLE?
California Chrome is our stallion. He’ll be the daddy of our baby foal.
WHY DID WE PICK CALIFORNIA CHROME?
California Chrome is not only a Hall of Fame racehorse, but living proof that through hard work, perseverance and a little bit of luck can still bring success and prosperity.
WHAT’S CHROME’S STORY?
Chrome defied the odds and inspired the masses. He was born on February 18th, 2011, and the experiment of two friends that had never owned a racehorse before, and so were so famously inexperienced they named their own stable Dumb Ass Partners. Early on, they and others noticed that their horse’s talent, alertness and desire to compete was so strong he dominated many of his early races and brought the world to its feet by coming only inches away from winning the Triple Crown, long considered the most difficult feat in sports.
WHAT KIND OF IMPACT DID CHROME HAVE?
Along with becoming the wealthiest racehorse in history, Chrome developed a cult following. His legions of fans dubbed themselves “Chromies,” and considered him an incarnate of ‘The People’s Horse,’ a reminder that greatness can be earned and not bred. Penny Chenery, who bred the legendary horse Secretariat, once declared Chrome a testament that “it doesn't matter from whence we came but how we dance when we get to the ball.” Given his achievements and origins, Chrome is a natural choice for our stallion, and our challenge to all help raise a foal that can uphold his legacy.
WHAT’S CHROME’S ROLE IN THE CLUB?
As a stallion, Chrome will breed with a mare of the Club’s choosing. We have selected three mares to pick from: Barbara Orr, Colerful Bride and Sixty Five North. The winning mare will carry and deliver our foal. This horse will be our horse. The People’s Horse.
WILL CHROME PERFORM ANY OTHER ROLE IN THE CLUB?
Chrome plans on hosting a cocktail reception in his barn and other members-only events next spring. And he’ll be personally signing our club posters with his hoof (and paint on it.)
WHAT ABOUT THE MEMBERS-ONLY BBQ IN LEXINGTON?
During the heart of the fall racing season, we’re planning a member’s only weekend from October 27th to October 29th in Lexington, Kentucky, where our supporters can visit Taylor Made Farm to meet the mares we’ll be choosing from, learn basic horsemanship techniques from the farm’s experts, and attend our inaugural members barbecue.
ANY OTHER ACTIVITIES PLANNED?
Absolutely. We’ll be hosting a Bourbon intensive at a local distillery, and taking members to the races at Keeneland, one of the oldest racetracks in the country, with a tour of the Clubhouse and a private tutorial from our own resident handicapper.
WHERE WILL MEMBERS STAY?
We’ve rented a chateau near the farm for members that want the complete Kentucky experience, along with a block of discounted rooms at partner hotels in downtown Lexington.
WHEN WILL WE VOTE ON WHICH MARE WE WANT?
Throughout the fall, we'll be bringing experts by the farm to give their assessment on which mare they believe is the best choice, and sharing those reports with you. Our selection of a mare will happen early next year.
HOW WE WILL WE VOTE?
As a member, you'll be given private access to our digital voting form, at which point you'll be able to make your selection.
WILL MEMBERS VOTE ON ANYTHING ELSE?
Yes. We'll seek your vote on a range of issues, including offering a name for The People's Horse. (Yes, many have already picked "The People's Horse" as a name.)
WHO IS RUNNING THIS CLUB?
The People’s Horse is a joint partnership between True.Ink, the experience-based magazine, and Taylor Made Farms, the noted horse farm in Lexington, Kentucky, and stallion manager of California Chrome.
ARE MEMBERSHIPS ANNUAL?
Yes. Each Membership Plan is annual and currently scheduled for renewal next spring.
WILL PLAN BENEFITS CHANGE OVER TIME?
Yes. Nobody has ever done what we're trying to do, and we'd love to hear from the members about what kind of access, products and experiences they might like. Kindly send any and all ideas to members [at] peopleshorse.com
DO MEMBERS OWN THE HORSE?
Currently, members do not own an equity stake in the foal we are breeding. Like many racing clubs, members get to vote on stable matters and enjoy the experience of horse ownership without any of the risk or liability.
WILL MEMBERS EVENTUALLY HAVE A CHANCE TO BUY EQUITY?
Yes. If we are lucky enough to breed and develop a horse that is healthy, fit and suitable for racing, our first generation of BARNCHAMPS in good standing will have an exclusive chance to participate in our first equity offering.
WHEN WILL SHARES BE OFFERED?
After birth, once experts determine the foal is fit for racing, we will open up a limited round of exclusive shares first to our BARNCHAMPS. We estimate that period to be the summer of 2018.
WHY AREN'T SHARES AVAILABLE NOW?
Our goal is to offer the experience of horse ownership at an affordable price. One component of horse ownership is choosing which mares to breed to a stallion. We currently have three mares to choose from, and it's unclear which foal the club will raise, own and therefore offer an equity stake in.
ANY OTHER REASONS WHY SHARES ARE NOT AVAILABLE NOW?
Good question. The early years of a horse’s life are fraught with complications. Horses often get sick, suffer accidents and countless hurdles on their path to the racing. Should anything happen to our foal during pregnancy or early life on the farm, we prefer the members not assume that risk.
HOW MUCH WILL SHARES COST?
The purpose of The People's Horse is not an investment vehicle. However, we believe in offering a true experience, and offering members a financial stake at a reasonable price point. At this early stage, and based on a myriad of factors, which include the value of the foal, size of our equity pool and eligible club members it's impossible to offer a fair estimate on share pricing.
WHAT IF THE MARE OR FOAL GETS SICK?
Horses often suffer from illnesses, ailments and accidents. It is a tradition that comes with no guarantees, and members should expect the unexpected. In the event our horse becomes sick, injured and unable to race, we have selected a number of retirement farms, and those amenable to visitors.
DOES THE CLUB EXPECT TO WIN BIG PURSES?
We’re optimists, but realists too. Horse racing is notoriously costly to participate and owners often struggle to win big purses. We’ll try our best, and have a lot at our disposal, but purses are not our mission. The purpose of the People’s Horse club is offer anyone the experience of horse ownership, to have fun, to learn and inspire a growing community. We are interested in forging a new bond between ourselves, our horse and each other. We invite you to join us.
